Square
Updated October 2, 2026
The Square integration turns payments taken in Square into contact activity in Pluspoint. When a customer Square can identify pays at a linked location, typically a loyalty member who enters their phone number, Pluspoint creates or updates their contact and adds a Payment completed entry to their timeline. That entry can start an automation, so a payment can lead to a survey, a coupon or a message.
Before you start
- Account Settings permission set to Full — the Integrations tab is hidden from everyone else.
- The sign-in details of the Square account that takes the payments.
- The Pluspoint locations that match your Square locations.
Where to find it
Settings → Integrations, or go to https://app.pluspoint.io/account-settings/integrations.
Connect Square
- Go to Settings → Integrations.
- Click Add integration and find Square.
- Click Connect. Square’s sign-in page opens.
- Sign in to the Square account you want to connect and allow access.
Back in Pluspoint, the Manage integration modal opens so you can link Square locations to Pluspoint locations.
Pluspoint asks Square for read access to your business profile, locations, payments and customers. It never changes anything in Square.
You can connect several Square accounts, for example one per franchisee. Each appears as its own Square row, labelled with the business name. Connecting an account that is already connected refreshes it in place.
Link Square locations
Payments are recorded only for Square locations linked to a Pluspoint location.
- Open the Manage integration modal. It opens automatically after connecting, and later with the Manage button on the Square row.
- For each Square location, choose Connect to location and pick the location, or choose Don’t connect. Locations deactivated in Square are marked Inactive in Square.
- Click Save.
A Pluspoint location can hold one Square location, and a Square location can be linked to one Pluspoint location.
What gets recorded
| Behaviour | Detail |
|---|---|
| When | Within a few minutes of the payment |
| Which payments | Completed payments at a linked Square location where Square knows the customer: a loyalty member, a saved card, or a customer the seller attached to the sale |
| Not recorded | Payments where Square has no customer, customers with neither a phone number nor an email address in Square, and payments made before the location was linked or while the integration was disconnected |
| Contacts | A new contact starts unsubscribed when the customer has unsubscribed from your Square marketing emails. The linked location is added to the contact |
| Timeline entry | Payment completed with the amount. View more shows the payment details, such as the receipt link |
| Repeat customers | Every payment is recorded as its own entry |
| Sending | None. Recording a payment sends nothing; anything the customer receives comes from an automation you build |
Send a survey after a payment
- Go to Campaigns → Automated and click Create automation.
- Click the Trigger node and select Payment completed under Trigger event(s). This option appears once a payment integration such as Square is connected.
- Optionally narrow who enters under Who can enter, using the payment fields below.
- Click the + below the trigger and add a Wait if you want to give the customer time. A wait placed directly after the trigger is measured from the payment.
- Click the + again and add Send survey, Send coupon or Send message.
- Click Save, then switch Enabled on from the Automated list.
| Payment field | Use it to |
|---|---|
| Payment provider | React only to Square payments |
| Payment account | React to one Square account when several are connected |
| Location | React to payments at specific locations |
| Amount paid, Currency | React to larger or smaller purchases |
| First purchase, Number of purchases | Welcome new customers or thank regulars |
Number of purchases counts the payments Pluspoint has recorded for the customer across every payment integration on the account, from the day each was connected. First purchase is Yes for the first payment Pluspoint records for the customer. Pluspoint has no payment history from before you connected Square, so each existing customer’s first payment after connecting also counts as a first purchase.
To survey a returning customer at most once a month, rely on the survey template’s Over-survey protection. Once per contact limits the automation to a single run per contact, ever.
Note Pluspoint does not treat a payment as permission to message a customer. Make sure you have the right to contact the people who pay at your locations. Contacts who have unsubscribed are never messaged.
Automations covers the canvas, conditions and send steps in full.
Disconnecting Square
- On the Square row, click Delete, or use the red Delete button inside the Manage integration modal.
- Confirm in the Delete integration? dialog.
The connection and its location links are removed, and Square payments stop arriving. Contacts and their payment history stay.
If access is removed from the Square side, the row shows Disconnected and the account receives an email. Reconnect with the same Square account restores the location links.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A payment is not on the customer’s timeline | The Square location is not linked, Square did not know who paid, or the customer has no phone number or email address in Square | Link the location in Manage integration. For loyalty, ask customers to enter their phone number at checkout |
| Payment completed is missing from the trigger list | No payment integration is connected | Connect Square under Settings → Integrations |
| The Square row shows Disconnected | Access was removed in Square, or Square no longer accepts the connection | Click Reconnect and sign in to the same Square account |
| A location is missing from the Location dropdown | It is already linked to a Square location | Disconnect it from that Square location first |
| Payments arrive but nothing is sent | The automation is still a draft, or the contact is unsubscribed or has no address for the channel | Check the automation’s Enabled switch and the contact record |
